www.ibm.com/opensource

I was in a meeting earlier this week when someone mentioned IBM now has an external web site with some information on open-source: www.ibm.com/opensource.

It has some useful info, and I understand more is on the way.

The part of most interest in some forthcoming posts is the relationship between “open standards” and “open source.” There is some mention of this in the FAQ, FrequentlyAskedQuestions, as well as the paper Integrating Open Source into your business.

Note that to say “IBM’s business model is based on high-risk innovation using open standards” is not the same thing as “IBM’s business model is based on high-risk innovation using open-source.” The second follows from the first, not the other way around.

The site also lets you “ask the experts.” I tried it a couple of weeks ago and still haven’t heard back, so I suggest you don’t hold your breath. I just sent a follow-up note to see if anyone is there. (I’m hoping the note eventually gets forwarded to me so I get to respond to myself, lending a a new meaning to the phrase “stump the chump” known to Car Talk fans.)
