Marketing Yourself on the Web: Write With Authority

You should speak with authority when marketing yourself on the web. Though you may wonder if you can speak with authority on any topic, I know that you are the recognized expert on at least one person.

That would be you. You are the world’s greatest authority on yourself, no doubt about it.

There is a problem, however. You can write with authority about yourself, but once you start a post on your favorite topic, you will find it hard to bring that post to an end, or to write about any other topic.

Don’t write about yourself, or at least try not to write too much about yourself. Instead, write about something to which you bring great passion. That is the best way to write effective posts and to improve your writing skills.

You can trust me on this. I speak with great authority.

Goggle says DaveShields is THE World’s Greatest Authority

How do you measure authority?

It’s a tough question.

Each of us is of course the recognized authority on at least one person — themself.

Beyond that we need a way to measure authority. Let’s use as our authority on that the world’s greatest authority on the Web and all of its content, Google, which indexed its trillionth page a few days ago.

I take as the highest measure of authoritative opinions that person who has been deemed to be the world expert on authoritative opinions.

Do a search on “authoritative opinions”.

So who is the world’s #1 expert on authoritative opinions according to my partner Google?

That would be me, or as Miss Piggy, no slouch when it comes to speaking with authority, would say “Me me’d? Moi Moi’d”.

You can trust me on this. I speak with great authority.

Thanks, Google!

Marketing Yourself on the Web: If Your Don’t Market Yourself on the Web, Then Who Will?

Some of the wisest words that have been uttered over the ages are by Hillel the Elder. Both are as profoundly true today as when he first uttered them almost two thousand years ago.

“That which is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow. That is the whole Torah; the rest is the explanation; go and learn.”

For their application today, see my posts Take No Unfair Advantage and “No innovation matters more than that which saves lives.”.

“If I am not for myself, who will be for me? And when I am for myself, what am ‘I’? And if not now, when?

I interpret this as meaning, among other things that:

  • If I don’t market myself then who will? So I must marketmy self — on the web.
  • When is now. My most effective marketing tool is my own writing, mainly in the form of a blog.
