A Unicomp Keyboard is THE Best Keyboard I Have Used in the Last Decade.

I am writing this post on my new Unicomp keyboard.

It is THE best keyboard I have used in well over a decade.

Moreover, it CLICKS!

Mine cost about sixty bucks, and is worth every penny.

Age has its disadvantages, but among the advantages for we aging programmers is that we can recall the days when keyboards were not a pile of mush, but were a pleasure to use.

IBM’s 029 Keypunch had one of the best keyboards I have ever used. The only better ones were also made by IBM. I just search ebay for “ibm 029 keypunch” and found this

Ebay also has a few Selectric typewriters, IBM’s best product ever. See for example this

The Unicomp keyboard. It is fabulous, and you can count click on it.

I have heard that those unicomp keyboards are great. I have three IBM Correcting Selectric II typewriters. There is nothing like typing on those Selectric II keyboards. They really do have the best feel of any keyboard.

    Dave replies:

I agree. The Selectric was IBM’s finest product. The 026 keypunch keyboard also had a very nice feel.

A hearty “Amen, brother” on the Unicomp. All the feel of the Model M in a modern black. I love mine. I appreciate a keyboard you can pound on, and one that lets my office mates know “Andrew is working.”

(If you prefer a slightly quieter model with less of a ‘power click’ — but still leagues better than 99 percent of what you can find — Key Tronic’s Designer is another incredible board.)

I was impressed with the Customizer and Space Saver too, as demonstrated by this blog post.

Still, I’ve since switched to the Kinesis Advantage. It takes a while to retrain one’s muscle memory, but the difficulty is worth the cost.
